Prices and Weights

Cannabis Prices and Weights, Explained

For ten years, Origins has built relationships with Washington growers and brands, and that is why fresh drops, small batch finds and everyday favorites share one menu. This guide explains how weights, price per gram and Washington's taxes work so you can shop with confidence. For today's actual prices, always use the live menu.

How the retail price works

The price on the shelf and the total at the till are not always the same number. Here is what sits behind each one.

Shelf

The price you see

Set by the product, the weight and the store. The live menu shows it as it stands today.

37%

Excise tax, in the shelf price

Washington requires it to be included in the price you see.

Plus

Sales tax, at checkout

State and local sales tax is added when you pay.

Medical

Qualifying patients differ

Excise and sales tax exemptions can apply to qualifying purchases. See the tax section below.

How customers save

Beyond the shelf price, there are several ways to get more for your money at Origins:

All of it is covered under More ways to save at Origins below, and in full on the Deals page.

Weights

How cannabis is sold by weight

Flower is sold in a handful of standard weights. Knowing them makes any menu easier to read, because the weight is what a price is attached to.

Other products are measured differently, so compare like with like.

ProductHow it is measuredWhat to compare
Pre-rollsBy grams per cone, singles or multipacks by countTotal grams in the pack, not the number of joints
Vape cartridges and all in one disposablesBy grams, usually 0.5 g or 1 gThe size, and the process: distillate or live resin
ConcentratesBy the gramThe process, which sets the price more than the weight does
Edibles and drinksBy milligrams of THCTotal milligrams in the pack, and the milligrams per serving
Tinctures and capsulesBy milligrams in the bottle or the countBottle size and total milligrams
TopicalsBy size and formatThe format that suits where you will use it

General-use edibles in Washington are limited to 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. Separate high-THC compliant medical products can go up to 50 mg per serving and 500 mg per package. Either way, milligrams per serving tells you the dose, and total milligrams tells you the value.

Value

A simple way to compare: price per gram

Divide the price by the weight in grams. That gives every product a price per gram, so you can compare sizes side by side. For edibles, divide by total milligrams. For a pre-roll multipack, use the total grams in the pack.

Example only, not menu pricesA 3.5 g eighth at $42 works out at $12 per gram. A 7 g quarter at $77 works out at $11 per gram.

Larger formats often bring the price per gram down, but only if you will finish them. Flower that sits too long loses aroma, so two eighths you enjoy can be better value than an ounce you stop reaching for.

Price per gram is one way to compare value, but it does not tell the whole story. Freshness, farm, cultivation, cure, process, quality and how long the product has been sitting also matter.

What drives the number

What moves a price

Price follows how a product was grown, trimmed and cured far more than it follows how strong it is. Two eighths can test close together on THC and still differ a lot in aroma, bud structure and finish. Six things set where a product lands.

01

The farm

Craft growers working in small batches cost more to run than large commercial grows.

Small batch tends to sit higher

02

Trim

Hand trimmed flower keeps its trichomes and shape. Machine trimmed is faster and more economical.

Hand trimmed costs more

03

Cure

Slow curing protects aroma and takes time.

Slow cured costs more

04

Process

For vapes and concentrates: distillate, live resin, cured resin, live rosin.

Live and solventless processes cost more than distillate or shatter

05

Format and weight

Single or multipack, cartridge or all in one, eighth or ounce.

Larger weights usually lower the price per gram

06

Hardware and packaging

All in one disposables carry the device cost.

Part of the price is not cannabis

Origins carries quality options across multiple price points. Which one is right depends on what you value: aroma, volume, a particular farm, or simply the best fit for the evening you have in mind.

Origins

Ten years of relationships, on your shelf

Price is only part of what you pay for. Since 2016, Origins has built its menu on relationships with Washington growers and brands, and that shapes freshness, selection and what we can offer at different price points. Small batch can be better value than a bigger bag, depending on what you want.

01

Ten years of relationships

Origins has spent ten years building trust with Washington growers and brand teams, many since the medical era. Those relationships shape what reaches our shelves.

02

Special buys

When a farm has a strong harvest or a limited run, a relationship is what lets us bring it in at a price that works for customers.

03

Special drops

Because of our relationships, we often carry products and drops that customers may not find at other dispensaries in our immediate market. Ask a Cannabis Guide what is new.

04

Fresh drops

New harvests and new releases arrive often, so the shelf you saw last month is not always the shelf you will find today.

05

Rotation

Featured vendors and offers rotate weekly, which keeps the menu moving and gives small and large producers room to shine.

06

Freshness

We buy thoughtfully and rotate stock so that what you take home is in good condition and worth the money you spent.

Price is not the same as value. Quality, freshness, selection and the people behind the shelf all count toward what you get for your money.

Origins vs. Others

Competitive pricing, with fresh offers every week

We aim to offer competitive pricing, and on many products some of the strongest value in town. Some of the products and special drops we carry are not available from the competitors around us, which is one of the advantages of the vendor relationships Origins has built over the last 10 years.

Every Thursday we roll out new Origins vs. Others offers. They show more than competitive pricing: they show current products and value that can set us apart from what customers are seeing around us.

You do not have to take our word for it. Compare the live menu with anywhere else you shop, then see what is running on the Deals page.

Tax

What is in the shelf price, and what is added at checkout

Washington taxes cannabis more heavily than most products, and it helps to know where each tax sits.

Amplify 2.0 rewards the people who keep coming back

Our loyalty program is built on a simple idea: the more you shop with us, the more you get back. You earn 1 point per pre-tax dollar, and there are three tiers to grow into.

Tier 01
Smooth & Mellow
One time20% off

Applied automatically after your third visit within 90 days of your first.

Tier 02
Heavy Hitter
4,000 points20% off

Every purchase, once you reach the tier.

Tier 03
OG
8,000 points30% off

Every purchase, once you reach the tier.

The Amplify loyalty cycle runs from March 1 through February 28. If you reach Heavy Hitter or OG during the cycle, you keep that tier for the rest of the current loyalty year and through the following loyalty year. Points are tracked only in the Origins app. Amplify benefits cannot be combined with other promotions, so you take whichever is better on the day. Medical tax relief works differently because it applies to tax rather than the shelf price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in an eighth, quarter, half and ounce? +
An eighth is 3.5 grams, a quarter is 7 grams, a half ounce is 14 grams and an ounce is 28 grams. A gram is the smallest standard flower weight.
How is cannabis priced in Washington? +
By weight and format. Flower is priced for a set number of grams, vapes and concentrates by size and process, and edibles by total milligrams. The farm, cultivation, trim, cure and batch all affect where a product sits, and larger weights usually lower the price per gram.
Why is cannabis taxed so heavily in Washington? +
Washington applies a 37% cannabis excise tax on retail sales, plus state and local sales tax. The excise tax is built into the shelf price, and sales tax is added at checkout.
Do medical patients pay less tax in Washington? +
Under Washington Department of Revenue and Department of Health guidance, qualifying patients in the medical cannabis authorization database who buy compliant products at a medically endorsed retailer are exempt from the excise tax and the sales tax on those purchases. The recognition card carries a minimum $1 fee set by the state, and retailers may charge more. Ask a store team member about eligibility and how it works.
How do I compare value between two products? +
Price per gram is a useful place to start: divide the price by the grams. It does not tell the whole story, though. Freshness, farm, cultivation, cure, process, quality and how long a product has been sitting also matter. A larger format can lower the price per gram, but only if you will finish it while it is still fresh.
Is cheaper cannabis weaker? +
Not necessarily. Price reflects many things, including the farm, how the product was grown, trimmed and cured, its format and how much you buy. Potency alone does not set it. A Cannabis Guide can help you find something that suits what you want.
Is expensive cannabis better than cheaper cannabis? +
Not automatically. A higher price often reflects craft, such as hand trimming, slow curing or small batch production, but the best value is the product that suits you. At West Seattle you can smell isolated terpenes at the Terpene Bar and judge for yourself before you buy.
What are the ways to save at Origins? +
Origins offers Amplify 2.0 loyalty rewards, medical tax relief for qualifying patients, Wisdom, Veteran and Hospitality or Industry discounts, new offers every Thursday, and daily and weekly deals, including vendor-supported offers. See the Deals page for what is running now.
Where can I see today's prices? +
The live menu for each store updates in real time and is the only reliable source for today's prices and stock. You can also call West Seattle on (206) 922-3954 or Redmond on (425) 298-0170.
