What Is the Banana Headband Strain? Lineage, Flavor and How It Differs From Headband OG

•7 min read
Cannabis EducationFlower Guide

Quick answer: Banana Headband is an indica-leaning hybrid, usually published as 818 Headband crossed with Banana OG. Riot Seed Co lists a different cross, Headband x Platinum Banana OG BX1, credited to Matthew Riot. No breeder is confirmed for menu versions. Expect sweet banana over diesel and lemon.

What is the Banana Headband strain?

Banana Headband is an indica-dominant hybrid built from a Headband cut and a banana-flavored OG. AllBud and Crop King Seeds both put it at 60 percent indica.

That is roughly where agreement stops. This is a young cultivar with a thin paper trail.

Who bred Banana Headband?

Nobody has confirmed it. Crop King Seeds states that the original breeder is unverified, and AllBud names no one. Weedmaps says it is still gathering information.

One breeder-side claim exists. Speakeasy Seedbank lists a Banana Headband from Riot Seed Co, credited to Matthew Riot, with a product photo dated October 2021. That listing is retired.

There may be a real origin here. It just has not been written down anywhere checkable. Leafly has no entry.

What is Banana Headband's lineage?

Two crosses circulate, and they are not the same plant.

Published cross Source Breeder named
818 Headband x Banana OG AllBud, Crop King Seeds None
Headband (56 day cut) x Platinum Banana OG BX1 Riot Seed Co Matthew Riot

One layer up it gets murkier. 818 Headband, also sold as Sour OG, comes from The Cali Connection in the San Fernando Valley. It crosses original Sour Diesel with an SFV OG Kush IBL male.

Banana OG is the messy half. Cannigma credits Orgnkid with a Banana male over an OG Kush female, then notes Orgnkid reportedly called it Skunk #1 x Haze. Those are different plants.

Name drift is normal in young cultivars, as with the Blue Lobster family.

How is Banana Headband different from Headband OG?

Headband OG leads with fuel and lemon. Banana Headband pushes sweetness in front of that fuel. The rest of the difference is paperwork.

Lineage 818 Headband x Banana OG, disputed OG Kush x Sour Diesel
Breeder None confirmed DNA Genetics, The Cali Connection
Era Not documented Reported to 1990s California
Lead flavor Sweet banana, then lemon Diesel, lemon, earth

Lab THC Unverified, 28 to 30 claimed About 21, topping near 25
Documentation Thin Strong, multiple breeder sources

Headband OG is better documented by a wide margin. Its two California cuts are covered in our Headband OG strain guide.

Writing for GreenState in 2023, Cara Wietstock noted that Headband's head-pressure feeling may be partly the name doing the work.

What does Banana Headband taste and smell like?

Sweet creamy banana first, then lemon and sour citrus, with woody pine and spicy earth behind it. AllBud also lists a chemical note, which is the Headband half announcing itself.

Weedmaps reviewers logged two flavors only, ammonia and lemon. That points at the diesel side rather than the fruit.

Crop King names limonene, myrcene and linalool. No percentages, no lab panel. Our guide to what terpenes actually do covers why a terpene name without a number tells you almost nothing.

Is Banana Headband really 28 to 30 percent THC?

Treat that range as marketing until a lab panel says otherwise. Both pages publishing it sell seeds, and neither attaches a certificate of analysis.

Headband itself averages about 20.8 percent on Cannigma's lab data, and usually tops out near 25. A cross landing five points above both parents would be unusual.

THC percentage is a weak predictor anyway. The grower matters more, which is the point of our piece on who grew your weed. The indica tag matters less than people think, as our sativa and indica breakdown explains.

What we tell people at the counter

Banana Headband moves through Washington menus in batches, never as a staple. A producer runs it, we get a few weeks, then it is gone.

Ask two things at the register. What is the packaged date, and what does the terp panel say. A Guide at West Seattle or Redmond will pull up both.

If it is out, tell us what appealed. Sweet-over-fuel profiles are common, so we can usually find a near match the same week. People wanting the lift without the sweetness often land on Jack Herer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Banana Headband an indica or a sativa?

AllBud and Crop King Seeds both list it as an indica-dominant hybrid, about 60 percent indica. Those splits are catalog shorthand, not lab data. Its parents also pull opposite ways. Headband is known for head pressure, while Banana OG has a creeper reputation.

Who bred Banana Headband?

No breeder is confirmed for the version on dispensary menus. Crop King Seeds says the original breeder is unverified, and AllBud names nobody. The only breeder-side claim we found is Riot Seed Co, credited to Matthew Riot, and that listing is retired.

What does Banana Headband smell like?

Sweet creamy banana first, then lemon and sour citrus, with woody pine and spicy earth underneath. AllBud also flags a chemical edge, which is the Headband side showing up. Weedmaps reviewers logged two notes only, ammonia and lemon. No fuel means no Headband.

How is Banana Headband different from Headband OG?

Headband OG is the original 1990s California hybrid of OG Kush and Sour Diesel, and it leads with fuel and lemon. Banana Headband is a newer cross that puts sweet banana in front of that fuel. Headband OG is also far better documented.

Can I buy Banana Headband in Seattle or Redmond?

Only if a Washington licensed producer is running it, because every gram sold in a Washington store has to be grown in state. Banana Headband rotates here rather than sitting on the shelf, so check the live West Seattle or Redmond flower menu first.

Worth a look if the name caught your eye

Buy this one with your nose, not your phone. The published record is too thin to lean on. Scan the West Seattle flower menu or the Redmond flower menu to see what landed this week, and ask about pre-rolls from the same batch if you want a gram before an eighth.
